UK Student Visa 2025

Studying in the UK is a dream for many, and obtaining a UK Student Visa is a crucial step in making that dream a reality. Whether you’re applying from outside or within the UK, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the UK Student Visa in 2025, including fees, requirements, and important details on dependents and working rights.

What is a UK Student Visa?

The UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4 Visa) is for international students who wish to pursue full-time education at a recognized UK institution. It allows you to stay in the UK for the duration of your course and gives you permission to work part-time during your studies, depending on your level of study and course.

To apply for this visa, you must meet certain eligibility criteria and prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in the UK.

Visa Application Fees

When applying for a UK Student Visa, you will need to pay the required application fees. The fees for 2025 are:

  • £490 to apply for a Student Visa from outside the UK.
  • £490 to extend or switch to a Student Visa from inside the UK.

These fees are non-refundable and must be paid at the time of your application. You may also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which grants you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) during your stay.

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

The Immigration Health Surcharge is a fee that all visa applicants must pay, which allows you to use NHS services during your stay. As of 2025, the charges are:

  • £776 per year of your course. This amount is applicable to all student visa holders.

It’s important to note that this is an annual fee, so the total amount you pay will depend on the length of your course. If your course lasts for multiple years, this fee will be added to each year.

Financial Requirements

You need to prove that you have enough money to support both your tuition fees and your living expenses while studying in the UK. The UK Home Office has specific financial requirements to ensure that you can cover these costs.

  • In London:
You must show that you have £1,483 per month for up to 9 months to cover your living expenses.

  • Outside London:
You must show that you have £1,136 per month for up to 9 months.

Additionally, you need to prove that you have enough funds to cover your tuition fees for the first year of your course.

Dependents on a UK Student Visa

If you are studying a PhD, other doctorate (RQF level 8), or a research-based higher degree starting on or after 1 January 2024, your partner and children (referred to as ‘dependants’) may be able to apply to join you in the UK.

  • Dependent Visa Application Fee:
    • £490 per dependent.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS):
    • £776 per year for each dependent.

Your dependants can apply for visas to stay with you, and they will be eligible to live, work, and study in the UK during your course.

Work Rights for UK Student Visa Holders

As a UK Student Visa holder, you can work part-time during your studies to help cover living costs. The rules regarding working are based on the level of your course:

  • If you are studying a degree-level course or higher, you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time.
  • During university holidays, you can work full-time without any restrictions.
  • After completing your course, you may be eligible for the Graduate Visa, which allows you to stay and work in the UK for up to 2 years (or 3 years for PhD graduates).

This gives you an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the UK after completing your studies.
